Why this guide exists

Hotels and short-term rentals have gone through the roof. A week away now costs what a fortnight used to, and that is before you have eaten or set foot in a taxi.

Traditional travel does not really suit a second act. You want time, not a timetable. You want to actually live somewhere for a bit, not tick it off a list and drag a suitcase to the next airport.

You have heard about house-sitting. It sounds brilliant. Free stays, lovely pets, see the country. But it is not clear how you actually start, who lets you in, or whether anyone will pick you over the next person.

What you will learn

  • How TrustedHousesitters actually works, and what the membership really gets you.
  • Writing a profile that homeowners say yes to, even on your very first application.
  • The meet-and-greet. What to ask, what to look for, when to walk away.
  • What to pack so you arrive looking sorted, not like a chaotic house guest.
  • How to be the kind of sitter homeowners want back, and recommend to their friends.
  • The practical mechanics. Keys, Wi-Fi, vets, post, plants, bins, the lot.
  • What to charge, what not to charge, and why money makes this whole thing complicated.
  • Getting your first sit booked, then keeping a steady stream coming in.

Who this is for

This guide is for you if…

  • You are curious about house-sitting but do not know where to begin.
  • You want to travel more without burning through your savings.
  • You are in your second act and want something with a bit more meaning than another resort.
  • You love animals and the idea of looking after a home feels natural, not stressful.
  • You want a steady, repeatable system, not vague advice from a forum.

This is not for you if…

  • You are looking for a get-rich-quick scheme. House-sitting saves money, it does not print it.
  • You want to build a paid pet-sitting business. That is a different job, with insurance and a tax return.
  • You do not fancy spending time in other people's homes. That is fair enough, but this is not the read for you.

About Michelle

Michelle Norton

I am Michelle. Geordie, 59, a full-time nomad house-sitting around the UK with my standard poodle Coco. No fixed address, no rent, no faffing about.

I am also a homeowner. I have hosted sitters in my own place, sat the other side of the kitchen table, and seen exactly what makes one applicant stand out and another get politely ignored.

That is what this guide gives you. Both sides of the door, written plainly, with nothing dressed up. You can find me on TikTok as @jordylass_com.

Questions you might have

Is this just for British people?

No. The principles work anywhere TrustedHousesitters operates. I use UK examples because that is what I know inside out, but the system travels.

Do I need to be retired?

Not at all. Plenty of sitters work remotely, are between jobs, or simply have flexible time. You do need stretches of free days to commit to a sit.

Can I house-sit if I have my own dog?

Yes, in many cases. Some homeowners welcome sitters with their own well-behaved dog. I cover how to find these sits and how to pitch yourself.

Is TrustedHousesitters membership included?

No. The membership is paid separately, directly to them. The guide explains what you get for it and whether it is worth it for you.

Will it read OK on my phone?

Yes. The PDF is laid out so you can read it on a phone in the in-app browser, on a tablet on the sofa, or print it if you prefer paper.

Can I get a refund?

If it is not what you expected, email me within 14 days and I will refund you.
